PAWS Atlanta: In-Kennel Enrichment Recipes

Simple recipes for the weekly enrichment schedule. For frozen enrichment, prep the items ahead of time and place them in the D1 deep freezer. Volunteers and/or Community Service can help with prep.

Always pay attention to an individual dog’s dietary restrictions and behavior needs.

Frozen KONG: Stuff with canned wet food. Freeze.
(
Use orange Toppls for small dogs or puppies only)

Frozen Lick Bowl: Spread a layer of canned wet food on the bottom and sides of a metal bowl. Sprinkle with dry kibble (or dog-safe fruit, if available). Top with water (or low sodium broth, if available). Freeze.

Edible Chew: Bully sticks will be stored in the D1 deep freezer, but weekly options may vary due to supply.

Frozen Lick Mat: Spread canned wet food on metal lick mat. Freeze.

Peanut B Benebone: Spread peanut butter over a Benebone.

Scented TP Roll: Close one end of a cardboard toilet paper roll by pressing down on the sides with your thumbs. Squeeze two drops of prey scent into the roll, letting it drip down the sides so that the scent spreads. Place a few pieces of kibble into the roll and close the other end. (Prey scent bottles are stored in the tub room. Scented rolls can be prepped ahead of time and stored in the labeled Vittles Vault in the tub room.)

1 HR Sound Machine: Play calming music in the section for one hour. DO NOT leave the sound machine running all day/night. (Pet Tunes speakers, charging cables, and instruction manuals are stored in a pop-top container in the tub room.)

IMPORTANT: Each enrichment activity should only be used once per section per week. Notify management when supplies are running low. You may repeat activities if there are supply shortages, but Peanut butter, edible chews, and TP rolls should each only be given once per week.

REMEMBER: Click for Quiet is DAILY, and can be done while completing your end-of-day checks.
