PAWS Atlanta: Mobile Treat Tossing
A simple and efficient way to change a fearful dog’s kennel presence and/or introduce yourself to a new dog. Creates a positive association with your approach to the kennel, without putting prolonged pressure on the dog.
HOW
Each time you plan to pass the dog’s enclosure (indoor or outdoor), approach the kennel door, toss a treat into the kennel, then walk away.
Begin with your body facing sideways at the kennel door. Work up to a head-on approach.
Toss underhanded, under the door or through the bars. Overhand throws can be uncomfortable for new/fearful dogs.
Classical counterconditioning = not dependent on the dog’s behavior. Toss the treat even if the dog is barking or growling.
The dog might not eat until you leave. That’s OK!
