PAWS Atlanta: Mobile Treat Tossing

A simple and efficient way to change a fearful dog’s kennel presence and/or introduce yourself to a new dog. Creates a positive association with your approach to the kennel, without putting prolonged pressure on the dog.

HOW

  • Each time you plan to pass the dog’s enclosure (indoor or outdoor), approach the kennel door, toss a treat into the kennel, then walk away.

  • Begin with your body facing sideways at the kennel door. Work up to a head-on approach.

  • Toss underhanded, under the door or through the bars. Overhand throws can be uncomfortable for new/fearful dogs.

  • Classical counterconditioning = not dependent on the dog’s behavior. Toss the treat even if the dog is barking or growling.

  • The dog might not eat until you leave. That’s OK!
