PAWS Atlanta: Kennelside Bonding

A safe way to build rapport with a new and/or fearful dog.  Do this after mobile treat tossing, when the dog’s body language has improved upon your approach. Start with their outdoor run. Work up to their indoor enclosure. Practice frequent short sessions (1-5 minutes at a time).

HOW

  • Sit or kneel beside the run. Your body should face to the side.

  • Be quiet, and do not make direct eye contact with the dog.

  • Toss treats underhanded, under the door or through the bars.

  • Only hand feed IF the dog is approaching the door willingly with loose body language.

  • Treat scatter before moving away.
